A used electric car is easier to assess when you review the vehicle and its battery rather than comparing the asking price or advertised range alone. Use this checklist before negotiating, and get professional help when a detail is unclear.
1. Check the history and overall condition
Ask for service and repair records, inspection information and any open recalls. Spain’s traffic authority (DGT) recommends checking the vehicle report and taking a road test; if anything concerns you, ask an independent workshop to inspect the car before signing. Check visible damage, tyres, brakes, dashboard warnings and that the listed equipment is included.
2. Request a battery assessment
Ask whether a brand dealer or qualified EV workshop can provide a traction-battery diagnostic. Find out what the report measures, when it was produced, its test limits and whether it records faults. The range shown during a drive depends on recent use, temperature, speed and route; by itself, it is not a battery-capacity certificate. Check the written battery coverage, including its dates, conditions and whether it transfers to another owner.
3. Test charging and check it fits your routine
Make sure the charging cables and connectors are included and in good condition. If practical, verify that the car can charge and check its specifications for maximum AC and DC charging power. Compare that with your usual journeys, leaving room for cold weather, motorway driving and detours. Then check whether you can charge at home or work and what a compatible home point could cost to install.
4. Compare the full cost and sale terms
Include insurance, maintenance, tyres and likely repairs in your budget. Ask in writing who the seller is, what coverage is offered and what it excludes: consumer protections can differ between a professional seller and a private sale.
